Anti-Snap Locks: The South London Guide
What anti-snap locks are, how lock snapping works, and which TS007-rated cylinders actually protect your home. From £55 fitted in Dulwich & South London.
How lock snapping works
Lock snapping accounts for a large share of forced entries on euro-cylinder doors. The burglar grips the protruding cylinder with mole grips or a dedicated tool and applies force until it snaps at its weak point — exposing the internal mechanism, which can then be manipulated open in seconds. It takes under a minute, it's quiet, and it works on any standard euro cylinder.
The vulnerability is structural: a standard cylinder has a thin section in the middle where the fixing screw sits. Snap it there and the front half comes away. Anti-snap cylinders fix this with a sacrificial front section — engineered snap lines that break away cleanly while the locking cam stays protected behind a reinforced barrier.
What TS007 ratings actually mean
TS007 is the British Kitemark standard for cylinders and handles, rated in stars. A 3-star cylinder has passed snapping, drilling, picking and bumping tests on its own. A 1-star cylinder passes the same tests only when paired with a 2-star security handle — the stars add up to the required 3.
For most South London homes, a 3-star cylinder is the simplest answer: one component, no dependency on the handle. We fit Ultion 3-Star, Yale Platinum 3-Star and ABS Master — all carry the Kitemark and all satisfy home insurers.
Does your door need one?
If your UPVC or composite front or back door has a standard euro cylinder — no stars, no Kitemark, possibly the one the builder fitted — the answer is yes. It's the single highest-value security upgrade for these doors: from £55 fitted, completed in about 20 minutes, and it closes the entry method burglars actually use.
Two checks you can do now: look at the cylinder from outside. If it protrudes more than a few millimetres beyond the handle, it needs replacing regardless — protrusion gives the snapping tool its grip. And check for a Kitemark with stars stamped on the cylinder face.
What we fit in South London
We carry 3-star cylinders in the full size range on the van, so most upgrades finish in a single visit. Every cylinder is measured and sized correctly — a cylinder that's even 5mm too long recreates the snapping vulnerability you're paying to remove. We also replace the handle where needed to reach the full TS007 3-star combination, and we key alike (one key for front and back) on request at no extra labour cost.
Questions about this topic
How much does an anti-snap lock cost fitted?
From £55 per cylinder supplied and fitted in Dulwich and South London. A typical home with a front and back door needs two cylinders, both done in one visit.
Will my insurer accept anti-snap locks?
Yes — TS007 3-star cylinders (or 1-star plus 2-star handle) are the standard UK insurers specify for euro-cylinder doors. We document the rating on your invoice.
Can burglars still snap a 3-star cylinder?
The sacrificial section is designed to snap away while the lock stays secure — that's the point. A 3-star Kitemark cylinder has passed independent snapping, drilling, picking and bump testing.
